Alain Badiou's Theory of Inaesthetics | Mark Alan Walker

There have been many theories of the philosophy of art, or aesthetics, throughout history, and new theories are being created all the time. This article provides an easy to understand overview of the aesthetic theory of French Philosopher Alain Badiou.

The History of Aesthetics

In the history of western thought, there have been many theories of aesthetics ? that is, philosophical theories about the purpose, function, meaning, and value of art. Some of the earliest theories of aesthetics were forwarded by the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle. Although Plato and Aristotle were, as is well-known, student and teacher, their aesthetic theories were very different. In the millennia that have passed since, there have been almost as many philosophical approaches to art as there have been philosophers.

Contemporary Aesthetics

In recent years, some European philosophers have been developing new aesthetic theories that attempt to take into account the artistic and technological developments of the twentieth century. Avant-garde art movements and the invention of new artistic media like film have called in to question the role of art in society and the relationship between art, politics, and truth. These changes have rendered some traditional aesthetic theories obsolete, and philosophers have been attempting to fill this newly created void.

Alain Badiou?s Inaesthetics

Among the new aesthetic theories that have emerged from Europe in the past few decades is French philosopher Alain Badiou?s theory of ?inaesthetics?. Badiou calls his aesthetic theory inaesthetics because he thinks that previous theories of aesthetics have given philosophy too much power when it comes to saying things about art. Badiou?s contribution to the field of aesthetics is his claim that philosophy and other fields of study are incapable of saying what art is or should be. Artistic truths, according to Badiou, are specific to art, so philosophy is more or less powerless when it comes to art.

Philosophy and Art

It might seem strange for a philosopher to claim that philosophy is powerless, but that has been a big part of Badiou?s appeal in the world of philosophy. Of course, he doesn?t say that philosophy is useless, but he does say that philosophy?s job is not to reveal truths about the way the world is. Instead, philosophy?s job is to talk about truths that other disciplines ? including art ? reveal, and to see what consequences those truths have.

Stephane Mallarm?

One example Badiou favors is the example of the French poet Stephane Mallarm?. Mallarm??s unique style of poetry introduces devices into the poetic vocabulary that hadn?t been there before. For example, Mallarm? arranged words in interesting configurations on the page, using the space of the poem itself as part of the poem. This type of thing is common by now, but at the time it was revolutionary. According to Badiou, Mallarm??s poetry is an example of artistic truth. Badiou has written quite extensively about Mallarm?, discussing what his poetry means and how it is situated in the context of the history of poetry. These writings are limited to a descriptive level, however. Badiou always stops short of saying what art or poetry should or shouldn?t do. That is the essence of inaesthetics.

Art is Irreplaceable

Whether we agree or disagree with the idea of inaesthetics, it is interesting to consider what such a theory indicates about philosophy and aesthetics today. Even in an age when we know that scientific truths can be overturned or altered by new discoveries, and when the boundaries between art and entertainment have been blurred beyond recognition, philosophers like Badiou still want to make sure that art continues to play an important role in our lives. Badiou might go a little too far when he says that artistic truths are specific to art, but his point is to say that art can?t be replaced in our lives. That is a point that everyone ought to agree on.

Uber shuts down New York City taxi beta, may see light at the end of the (Lincoln) tunnel in February (update: TLC responds)

Uber shuts down New York City taxi beta, may see light at the end of the Lincoln tunnel in February

Uber has been having a tough time getting a foothold in New York City, and it's temporarily withdrawing the UberTaxi service it had in beta. The withdrawal isn't entirely for the reasons you'd expect, however. While Uber claims to have been getting grief from the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission for offering a competing (if technically legal) service through its smartphone apps, the program's end was due to demand rather than any kind of outright ban -- the Commission's pressure reportedly kept Uber from matching interest with enough yellow cabs. Black car service is still on for those who don't mind the classic ride. Should that uncomfortable balance not be quite good enough, Mayor Bloomberg is promising a truce come February, when a shift in contracts will let New York change the rules and hopefully improve the market for taxi alternatives.

Update: TLC Commissioner David Yassky has weighed in with both an elaboration and claims that the Commission has been in favor of newer technology for awhile. He notes that the contracts expiring in February relate to exclusive payment arrangements with Creative Mobile Technologies and VeriFone, and that apps of all kinds (Uber's included) can compete for attention at that point. His full statement:

"In recent months, as e-hail apps have emerged, TLC has undertaken serious diligence and is moving toward rule changes that will open the market to app developers and other innovators. Those changes cannot legally take place until our existing exclusive contracts expire in February. We are committed to making it as easy as possible to get a safe, legal ride in a New York City taxi, and are excited to see how emerging technology can improve that process. Our taxis have always been on the cutting edge of technological innovation, from GPS systems to credit card readers."

NY brothers wait 6 years to claim $5 million lottery

Two brothers from central New York have claimed a $5 million lottery prize for a scratch-off ticket they bought at their parents' Syracuse store six years ago, state officials said.

Andy Ashkar, 34, of Camillus, and Nayel Ashkar, 36, of Cicero, came forward March 1, just 11 days before the top prize in the "$500,000,000 Extravaganza" scratch-off game would have expired, New York Lottery said.

Andy Ashkar said he bought the ticket at his parents' convenience store in Syracuse in 2006 and decided to share the winnings with his brother, officials said.

The agency said the younger brother said he waited so long to claim his prize because he was concerned the windfall could "negatively influence" his life if he didn't plan properly before being publicly introduced as the winner. Andy Ashkar also told lottery officials that he also didn't want the windfall to influence his engagement and subsequent marriage.

Calls to phone numbers listed for the Ashkar brothers went unanswered Wednesday morning.

Nayel Ashkar's wife, Sara, told The Post-Standard of Syracuse on Tuesday that news of the winnings was spreading fast, with family and friends calling to express their surprise and excitement.

"It's crazy," she said. "Hard to believe. It's still sinking in."

The brothers' mother, Wasa Ashkar, said her husband, Neyef, sold the winning ticket to Andy at the couple's Green Ale Market, but she couldn't remember exactly when. She said she and her husband were Palestinians from Jerusalem who immigrated to the United States nearly 40 years ago and have owned the store for 12 years.

"I'm happy. Of course I'm happy," she told The Associated Press over the phone before ending the conversation because she was busy with customers Wednesday morning.

Lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman said the brothers claimed their prize at the agency's Schenectady headquarters on March 1. Unlike winning tickets for games such as Lotto and Mega Million that expire in a year, tickets for scratch-off games expire a year after a game is retired. The Extravaganza game was retired on March 12, 2011, Hapeman said.

As is routine whenever a winner is related to the owner of the store that sold the ticket, the agency conducted an investigation. The inquiry determined Ashkar's scratch-off ticket was bought legitimately, Hapeman said.

The Ashkar brothers, both employed as managers at separate central New York auto dealerships, will be introduced at a news conference at a later date, the lottery spokeswoman said.

Logitech's K810 keyboard pairs with up to three devices, has a button for switching apps in Windows 8

Logitech's K810 Illuminated Keyboard can pair with up to three devices at once, has a button for switching apps in Windows 8

It was last week that Logitech announced two mice and a trackpad, all optimized for Windows 8. As it turns out, the outfit wasn't quite finished unveiling its Win 8 lineup: the company just outed the Illuminated Bluetooth Keyboard K810, which has a hotkey for toggling between open programs. It also features Easy Switch, a technology first introduced on the K760 that allows the device to pair with up to three Bluetooth-enabled devices at once, regardless of the OS. As for the switching bit, each paired device gets assigned to one of three function keys; just press the button to start using the keyboard with that device. In theory, then, you could have the same keyboard hooked up to your PC, tablet and phone, and be able to type on all of them from minute to minute, though that admittedly seems like an unlikely scenario.

As the product name would suggest, the keys have a backlight glowing from underneath. The lighting will automatically turn off if you haven't been using the keyboard for a certain period of time, but thanks to proximity sensors they'll kick in again when the keyboard detects your hands hovering close by. Lastly, the keyboard has a rechargeable battery rated for a month of runtime, though given the fact that it charges over USB, we can see some people bypassing the wireless connection entirely and leaving it plugged in. The K810 will sell for $100. Look for it to hit US stores in October, with European availability following a month later. In the meantime, we've got some hands-on shots below. (Psst... the Fn key is where the app-toggling button will be on final models.)

President of Gambia Says Special Herbs Cured Dozens of Patients with HIV, AIDS

Jonathon Benson
Natural News
October 14, 2012

Representing the seventh round of cases successfully treated since 2007, 68 people were recently discharged from Gambia?s Presidential Alternative Medical Treatment Programme (PAMTP) after reportedly being cured of either HIV or AIDS. Reports indicate that the confidential blend of boiled herbs developed by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has once again proven efficacious, illustrating not only that Western medicine is greatly lacking in its ability to effectively treat these epidemic conditions, but also that nature has once again trumped the laboratory when it comes to true healing.

It was about five years ago when Jammeh first announced, to the chagrin of conventional physicians everywhere, that he had successfully developed an herbal concoction capable of not only treating, but also curing both HIV and AIDS. Since that time, PAMTP has enrolled and treated dozens upon dozens of people with the conditions, many of whom have experienced dramatic results, according to reports. And yet both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) continue to fight against the treatment, claiming that it puts patients at risk.

?The objective of my medication is to get rid of the virus that the patients are infected with and I have made [this] very clear since the start of my treatment program,? Jammeh is quoted as saying by The Daily Observer. ?Because our salvation is when we go back to our natural pharmacists (forest), we will use Western medicine as complementary to natural African medicine.?

U.S. approach to medicine still pushes natural remedies to the back seat
In the U.S., the opposite approach is taken ? that is, if any sort of complementary approach is taken at all. At best, so-called ?alternative? treatments, which usually involve the use of natural herbs and other non-patented remedies, are typically added onto an existing conventional regimen. The case of treating HIV and AIDS, conventional doctors still employ the use of antiviral drugs that merely manage disease symptoms rather than actually fight the disease.

According to JollofNews, Jammeh?s treatment contains a blend of green paste, bitter drink, and bananas, the latter of which was shown in a 2010 study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry to help prevent the transmission of HIV, the virus believed by many to cause AIDS. During the time of the treatment, patients are advised not to take any conventional antiviral medications.

In his announcement, Jammeh explained that these and various other ?natural medicine? techniques will be integrated into every hospital throughout Gambia, and that Western treatments will only be used to complement them. The West African country also recently hosted a five-day training conference on HIV and AIDS to teach other countries how to strategically fight HIV and AIDS infections throughout the region.

Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy ~ Comfort Food #SundaySupper ...

I?ve often?said that food is so much more than sustenance.? It feeds more than our bellies.? It attaches itself to our memories.? It bonds friends and loved ones.??And it?nourishes our minds.

For instance, think about what we do for others during times of need or times of tragedy?we feed them.? We bring them meals.? We make sure they have food to eat when their mind may be elsewhere.

What types of foods do YOU reach for when you?re in need of something comforting?

For me, it depends.

I remember being 13 and fighting with my best girlfriend.? My father gave me chocolate ice cream to make me feel better.

I remember when a loved one died not too long ago.? After breaking the news to the family, we all cooked together.? For us, on that day,?it wasn?t about WHAT we ate, it was about creating that meal together.

But, food doesn?t necessarily only comfort during times of extreme sorrow.

Sometimes, we may have a bad day at work.? What do you grab?? Me???? I usually need Skittles.

Or take yesterday, for instance.? My computer was infected with a virus.? I needed macaroni and cheese?and LOTS of wine.

This week?s #SundaySupper is all about what feeds our bodies and our minds at the same time?those foods that we reach for when we need something to heal our hearts or comfort us when we need it.

Not only is our #SundaySupper team featuring fabulous comfort food recipes this week, but we have a fabulous guest:??Lee Woodruff.? Lee is a wife, mother of four, author, CBS This Morning contributor, and? founder of ReMIND.org.? She is also wife to one of my personal heros, Bob Woodruff, who many of us remember?after he was injured while reporting in Iraq, and whose journey of recovery and strength inspired us all.

Lee has a new book, Those We Love Most, which is about family, love, tragedy, coming together and healing.? In short, it holds a reflection of all of our lives.? Lee?also happens to be?a? foodie at heart and has a section of her blog devoted to Food for Thought.??Our own #SundaySupper leader, Isabel,?was recently?featured in this section with?one of her favorite comfort food recipes.

Lee will be joining us during our #SundaySupper live Twitter chat tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern.? We?ll be giving away?5 signed copies of Those We Love Most, and all you have to do to win?is share your most memorable comfort food recipes.? So please make sure you join us!

When I began brainstorming recipes for this week?s comfort food themed #SundaySupper, my mind immediately went to all of the foods many of us think of as ?traditional? comfort foods?casseroles, chicken and dumplings, homemade mac ?n cheese, pot roast?.

None of that seemed right.? I wanted to do comfort food ?Cocina style?.? And y?all, I think I hit the nail on the head.

Biscuits and gravy.

But, not just ANY biscuits and gravy?buttermilk biscuits with chocolate gravy.

Say, whaaa?

You read me right.? Buttermilk biscuits with chocolate gravy.

It?s almost insanity, is what it is.

I?d heard about this dish for years, but had never tried it.? Well, I found the perfect recipe on Sprinkle Bakes, and I?m so glad I did.? Because these. are. FABULOUS.

I?m not even a true chocolate lover and my?tastebuds were overwhelmed with the amazing flavors.

Here?s what I?ve decided.? Comfort food doesn?t need to be boring food.? And these Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy are anything but boring.? And they?re SO easy to make, that you?ll be sharing these often?not just when you?re in need of something comforting, but when you?re in need of something delicious.

?

For the Biscuits

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 2 Tbs. chilled shortening
  • 6 Tbs. cold butter, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 3/4-1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 Tbs. melted butter

For the Chocolate Gravy

  • 4 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbs. flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 4 Tbs. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

For the Biscuits

Preheat the oven to 450.

Add flour, butter, and shortening to a large bowl. Cut the butter and shortening into the flour using a pastry cutter until the mixture has formed the consistency of sand and has crumbs no larger than peas.

Pour in approximately 3/4 cup of the buttermilk. Mix the buttermilk in with a fork until all ingredients are able to come together in a sticky dough. Add more buttermilk if you need.

Turn the sticky dough out onto a well-floured surface. Knead the dough 6 times and pat it out flat into a 1? thickness.

Cut the dough using a 2? biscuit cutter and place biscuits on a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 10-14 minutes, or until biscuits are golden brown.

As soon as you remove the biscuits from the oven, brush the tops with the melted butter.

Serve warm with the chocolate gravy.

For the Chocolate Gravy

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, and sugar. Pour in the milk and whisk to combine.

Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it begins to boil. Turn the heat to medium, and continue whisking until the mixture has thickened and forms a ?gravy? consistency.

Remove from the heat and add the butter and vanilla to the gravy. Stir until combined.

Serve warm gravy over the buttermilk biscuits.

The biscuits, alone, are fabulous.? And oh, so comforting.

But with this amazing chocolate gravy, those biscuits turn into something almost shameful.? But you shouldn?t feel guilt for anything this good.

Comfort food doesn?t have to be boring food, y?all!

What?s your go-to comfort meal for when you need something to heal you, please you, or calm your mind?
