Chronic electrical stimulation at acupressure points may relieve stomach woes for diabetics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Diabetic patients who suffer from a common complication of diabetes called gastroparesis may find that chronic electrical stimulation (ES) at specific acupuncture points could relieve gastroparesis symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, early satiety, abdominal fullness, upper abdominal pain and bloating, according to study results unveiled October 22 at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 77th Annual Scientific meeting in Las Vegas.

The study, "Chronic Electrical Stimulation at Acupuncture Points Improves Dyspeptic Symptoms," used a watch-sized digital microstimulator that was specially developed for this project to assess the effects of ongoing electrical stimulation at acupuncture points on gastroparesis symptoms in diabetic patients with refractory gastroparesis. Despite medical therapy, these patients have not found relief for their symptoms and experience frequent physician and emergency room visits or hospitalizations because often they are unable to eat or keep food down and maintain proper nutrition, according to lead investigator Jiande Chen, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Medical Branch. "These are very severe symptoms and could be life-threatening as the treatment options for these patients are very limited and there are no effective medications," said Dr. Chen who noted that the device looks and works like the microstimualtors used to alleviate motion sickness that are already on the market.

Diabetes is a lifelong disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. High blood glucose causes chemical changes in nerves and damages the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the nerves. Gastroparesis is a type of nerve damage affecting the vagus nerve which controls the movement of food through the digestive tract. Ten to fifteen percent of the 25.8 million Americans living with diabetes have gastroparesis. This condition can worsen diabetes by making it more difficult to manage blood glucose levels because a delay in gastric emptying can cause a spike in glucose levels when the food finally enters the small intestine, according to the American Diabetes Association.

The device used for this blind cross-over design study on 26 diabetic patients with gastroparesis (18 completed the study) was worn either on the wrist or the leg with four-week ES and four-week sham ES in a randomized order. Electrical stimulation was performed via surface ECG electrodes placed at acupoints PC6 and ST36 using pulse trains. Sham-ES was performed using same parameters via non-acupoints. The PC6 acupuncture point is located on the wrist about 2 1/2 fingers up from the wrist crease on the inside of the forearm, while ST36 is located on the front of the leg, one hand width (four fingers) below the kneecap, on the outside, in the depression between the shinbone and the leg muscle.

Patients were asked to self-apply ES/Sham ES for two hours after each lunch and dinner and the electrogastrogram (EGG) and ECG were recorded at the beginning and end of each 4-week treatment.

According to investigators, 4-week ES not sham-ES "significantly improved" 5 of 9 gastroparesis symptoms: nausea by 29.7 percent; vomiting by 39.3 percent; abdominal fullness by 21.4 percent, bloating by 20.6 percent and retching by 31.1 percent. ES also resulted in a trend of increased vagal activity after eating.

"With all five symptoms significantly improving between 20 and 40 percent, this home-based, non-invasive electrostimulation therapy is feasible and effective in treating gastroparesis symptoms and possible mechanisms involving central, gastric and autonomic functions require further study, " said Dr. Chen. "Although this is a small study, the results are noteworthy because the side-effects and the cost are low." Dr. Chen added that the device is not yet on the market.

Rare star explosion reveals hidden black hole in our galaxy

Astronomers have spotted a rare X-ray star explosion near the center of our Milky Way galaxy, revealing a previously unknown black hole munching on gas from a neighboring sun-like star.

NASA's Swift satellite made the cosmic find last month when it detected a new and rapidly brightening X-ray source a few degrees from the galactic center of the Milky Way. Astronomers identified the outburst as a short-lived bright X-ray nova, which is produced when a stream of gas rushes toward either a neutron star or a black hole. Unlike a supernova, which is the explosive death of a star, novas are smaller explosions that do not completely destroy a star.

The black hole is thought to be 20,000 to 30,000 light-years away in the galaxy's inner region. Astronomers, who named the bright X-ray nova Swift J1745-26 after its coordinates in space, said witnessing such an event is rare.

"Bright X-ray novae are so rare that they're essentially once-a-mission events and this is the first one Swift has seen," Neil Gehrels, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement. "This is really something we've been waiting for."?[Stealth Black Hole Revealed by Nova (Video)]

At its peak in high-energy X-rays on Sept. 18, the nova reached an intensity equivalent to that of the?Crab Nebula. While these rays dimmed, the nova brightened in lower-energy emissions detected by Swift's X-ray Telescope through at least the beginning of October, according to NASA.

Additional observations suggested that a black hole was at the center of this radiation flare-up.

"The pattern we're seeing is observed in X-ray novae? where the central object is a black hole," Boris Sbarufatti, an astrophysicist from Milan's Brera Observatory who currently is working with the Swift team, said in an Oct. 5 NASA statement. "Once the X-rays fade away, we hope to measure its mass and confirm its black hole status."

The Swift team believes the black hole is part of a low-mass X-ray binary system, in which gas flows from a star into a disk around the?black hole, spiraling inward and heating up greatly as it heads toward the center.

But a cosmic glitch can disrupt the steady flow of gas and cause it to accumulate in the outer portion of the disk like water behind a dam, according to NASA scientists. After enough gas has built up (often over several decades), the disk can switch to a hotter, more ionized state that sends the gas rushing toward the center of the black hole, creating the X-ray nova.

Make Your Personal Brand Pass The Resume Scan | Business 2 ...

How to Win the Five-Second Resume Scan

One of the reasons that resumes are so hard to write is that they have to speak to many different audiences ? and to be compelling to each of them.

On top of that, they have to sell you in 5 seconds or less.

And, let?s be honest, the email is open and the phone ringing in that five second time frame. In other words, it has to sell you in a very distracted five seconds.

That?s a tall order.

Lucky for you, there are strategies that enable you to control where the reader?s eyes look for that five seconds. And, when you control where they look, you can control what they think!

Five Ways to Pass the Five Second Scan

Start with a Super-Hero Summary

The very first thing anyone reading your resume should see is a concise statement of why they should hire you. This should be at the top, bold and discrete from your resume. It needs to be specific to the position and compelling.

By putting this summary up front, you make certain that they get the one-two punch, even if they only look at your resume for one second!

Draw Attention to Your Key Points

Start by outlining the key points that you want to make on your resume. Perhaps you?d like to draw attention to relevant industry experience, a specific software program you use or an achievement from a previous employer.

Once you have this outline, think about the best way to make these points jump out above all others. You may want to include a box of languages you know or highlight your business philosophy prior to your work experience.

Make a plan that will enable you to focus energy on the key points you want to get across.

Using Bolding Like a Pro

Bolding (and formatting generally) helps you control the eyes of the reader. So use it wisely.

If everything is bolded, nothing jumps out. If nothing is bolded, you are losing a huge opportunity to guide your reader to the most important parts of your application.

Here are some rules of thumb that will help you get past the five second scan (and earn you the interview!)

  • Less than 20% of the page should be bolded. Less is more.
  • Keep your formatting & bolding patterns consistent across jobs.
  • Bold only the key phrase in a line.
  • When you read through ONLY the bolded words on your resume, it should make sense

When you follow these rules, your reader?s eyes will be able to glance down the page and still pull out all of the most important details!

Psst ? you can read more on bolding & formatting your resume here

Get Rid of Glaring Errors

The biggest thing that five second scans do is identify immediate ?No? resumes. Glaring errors are a sure route to that pile.

Glaring errors are extremely common. Extremely.

Have someone else read your resume from start to finish. Use spell check (duh). Double check all acronyms, industry-specific names, etc.

Ensure that you have all the requisite information on your page. (Have you been meaning to fill in the years on that one position and forgot?)

Don?t get rejected for a silly error.

Earn Yourself More Attention

This is the most interesting strategy. It?s also the riskiest, but, when done well, pays off big time.

Put yourself in the place of a recruiter, HR or Hiring Manager. They?ve got a stack of resumes on their desk. A big one. Now ask yourself how you can stand out in a way that is both effective and positive.

This is not the time to send a baseball glove with the note ?I?m a great catch.? Will you stand out? Yes. Is it positive? Almost certainly not. You will be the punchline at lunch.

So let?s talk about what is effective and positive: Using the Skills You Need for the Job to Stand Out.

What does that mean exactly? Let?s take a look at some examples:

If you are in sales, it might mean using your follow-up and consistency to ?close the deal? over the phone.

If you are a designer, it might mean using your application as an opportunity to show off your design skills ? specific to the company. (Use their branding, but make it your own!)

If you are in customer service, perhaps you include testimonials from callers you?ve handled.

The possibilities are endless. The idea is that you find a way to show the skills that you are going to need to excel at your work. This makes you unique and helps you to stand out in a way that is effective ? not tacky. And, of course, it will earn you more time and attention on your resume!

Why It Is Important to Cater to the Five Second Scan

It?s a reality that 80+% of candidates get rejected in the five second scan. It may not be pretty, but it?s true.

It?s the scan that narrows the field and defines your competition. Your resume needs to be built to win the scan.

Implementing these changes will drastically improve your chances of getting the job ? and impressing recruiters, HR and hiring managers alike.

(AP) ? Heading into the campaign's final weeks, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is upping his criticism of President Barack Obama's plans for a second term, accusing the Democrat of failing to tell Americans what he would do with four more years. The Obama campaign is aggressively disputing the notion, claiming it's Romney who hasn't provided specific details to voters.

At campaign events and in a new ad out Saturday, Romney is setting up the closing weeks as a choice between what he says is a "small" campaign that's offering little new policy and his own ambitious plan to fundamentally change America's tax code and entitlement programs.

The new Romney ad criticizes the president's policies on debt, health care, taxes, energy and Medicare, arguing that Obama is simply offering more of the same. The campaign did not say where the spot would air.

"Have you been listening to the Obama camp lately? They have no agenda for the future, no agenda for America, no agenda for the second term," Romney told a crowd of thousands who gathered in a band shell just off Daytona Beach. "They've been reduced to petty attacks and silly word games. Just watch it ? the Obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign."

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, continued the line of criticism Saturday at campaign stops near Pittsburgh and in Belmont, Ohio, saying Obama has not laid out a policy agenda for the country.

"He's not even telling you what he plans on doing," Ryan told a rain-soaked crowd of about 1,100 people at a campground in coal-rich eastern Ohio.

Ryan urged people to vote early, saying, "The one thing you can do is elect a man named Mitt Romney who will end this war on coal and allow us to keep these good paying jobs."

Obama's campaign disputes the notion that the president hasn't outlined a detailed second-term agenda, pointing to his calls for immigration reform, ending tax breaks for upper income earners, fully implementing his health care overhaul and ending the war in Afghanistan.

In a statement sent after Romney's Friday night event, Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner ticked through a series of policy items, calling them "just part of President Obama's agenda for a second term."

Obama, at the Democratic National Convention, called for creating 1 million manufacturing jobs over the next four years with a mix of corporate tax rate cuts and innovation and training programs. He has set a goal of cutting the growth of college tuition in half over the next 10 years. He also has called for Congress to pass proposals he made last year that include includes tax credits for companies that hire new workers and funding for local municipalities to hire more teachers, police officers and firefighters.

As for why Republicans would back the same proposals they have already voted against, Obama has told supporters he expects his re-election would "break the fever" on Capitol Hill that led to gridlock during his first term.

The president's aides are particularly irked by the questions about Obama's second-term agenda, because they say it's Romney who has failed to provide voters with details. They point to his refusal to provide specifics about his tax plan or outline what he would replace the president's health care overhaul with if he makes good on his promise to repeal the federal law.

An independent group backing Obama, though, is trying to renew attention on Romney's tenure at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The group, Priorities USA Action, is redoubling its efforts against Romney, re-airing an ad about an AMPAD plant in Marion, Ind. That spot features former employee Mike Earnest recalling being told to build a stage from which officials of the office supply company later announced mass layoffs.

He says, "It was like building my own coffin." That ad first aired in battleground states in the summer.

Romney aides have said AMPAD was a struggling business to begin with, and Bain overall created many more jobs than were lost.

That ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. The new campaign will be in addition to a $30 million effort against Romney policy proposals, the group said.

Both Obama and Romney retreated from the campaign trail Saturday to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he is huddled with advisers preparing for the debate. Among those with him are White House senior adviser David Plouffe and senior campaign strategist David Axelrod. Aides say Obama was also being assisted by National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and former Obama aide Karen Dunn.

Romney was to spend the weekend in Florida with aides preparing for the debate.

Romney running mate Paul Ryan planned campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Ohio on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden was headed for St. Augustine, Fla.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ on Friday that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions. "His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Obama stuck with domestic policy themes Friday, accusing Romney of moderating his stands and conveniently forgetting his past positions on economic and women's issues and coining a new campaign term for what he described as his opponent's condition: "Romnesia."

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

The president planned an extensive tour of battleground states following the debate, with events in Florida and Ohio on Tuesday, including a joint event with Vice President Joe Biden in Dayton, Ohio, before returning to the White House.

On Wednesday, Obama was packing his schedule with around-the-clock campaigning in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas, followed by events in Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; Chicago and Cleveland on Thursday. The campaign dubbed it the "America Forward!" tour.

Aides said the president planned to sleep aboard Air Force One from Las Vegas to Tampa on Wednesday night and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops. In a nod to the campaign's push for early and absentee voting, Obama was voting early in person in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday.
